At 4 p.m. on Friday 15 November, opening of eight new art projects will mark the launch of November’s exhibition season at Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre.
The fifth and final network’s meeting within the framework of the "Local Solidarity - Global Solidarity Network" (SOLID) project took place from 9 to 11 October in Brussels (Belgium), bringing together cities, regions and civil society groups from 12 countries , including representatives of Daugavpils City Council.
In the framework of the project “Our Cities Pairing on Environment Issues” a final fact-finding trip took place in Daugavpils
Daugavpils City Council in cooperation with Vanersborg municipality (Vänersborgs kommun) in Sweden (lead partner) implements project WIR within the framework of European Union Programme “Europe for Citizens”, 2nd activity “Democratic engagement and civic participation”. The project involves 10 partners from 7 countries – Sweden, Italy, Spain, Austria, Germany, Finland and Latvia. Specific goal of the project is to understand the policies and strategy developed by the EU and the welcoming and integrating procedures implemented in the different member states, in order to eliminate stereotypes and misguided narratives about refugees.
At 4 p.m. on Friday 4 October at Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre, after a fortnight of intensive studio work, the 15th International Painting Symposium “Mark Rothko 2019” will close with the opening of a group exhibition by its participants. The event will be immediately followed by the opening of another exhibition – the one-man-show, “Compositions”, by artist Māris Uldriķis.
At 4 p.m. on 20 September at Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre, during the opening ceremony of the new exhibition season that celebrates Mark Rothko’s 116th birthday, ten international artists will be greeted to formally open the 15th International Painting Symposium “Mark Rothko 2019”.
Daugavpils City Council together with Skelleftea municipality (Sweden) is working on the project Recruit potential (“Recruit potential – VET measures for Inclusive Employers”). It is being implemented by five partners from five different countries – Sweden, Portugal, United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Latvia and is financed by the EU program “ERASMUS+”. Lead partner is Skelleftea municipality in Sweden.
On August 29, the Daugavpils City Council signed a memorandum on ecological cooperation between the municipalities of Daugavpils and Suluova (Turkey). The document was signed by Jānis Lāčplēsis, First Deputy Chairman of the City Council, and Ahmet Davu, First Deputy Chairman of the Suluov District Administration, in the presence of representatives of both municipalities.
ON AUGUST 29, SEMINAR ON HOUSEHOLD WASTE MANAGEMENT WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE PROJECT “OUR CITIES PAIRING ON ENVIRONMENT ISSUES”
The Daugavpils City Council and its Turkish partners (Amasya region, Suluova city) are implementing a project “Our cities Pairing on Environment Issues”. The project aim is to increase the capacity of local administrations/NGOs on waste management practices, increasing awareness of local actors and society on the environment. “Basics”, an exhibition of contemporary ceramic art by 71 ceramic artists from the three Baltic States, will be opened at Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre at 4 p.m. on Friday 5 July. Under the framework of the exhibition, a conference on ceramic art will take place at the conference sector from noon sharp until 2 p.m.
From 11 to 14 of June 2019 the partner of the project – BCLL and Municipality of Veliko Tarnovo was hosting in Bulgaria Veliko Tarnovo the 4th SOLID international event which brought together towns, regions and civil society groups from 12 countries including representatives of Daugavpils City Council.
At 4 p.m. on Friday 5 July, Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre will open its height-of-summer season with exhibitions by Latvian, Baltic and international artists. The opening ceremony will be preceded by a conference of Baltic ceramicists, scheduled to start at noon sharp.
At 11 a.m. on Saturday 5 July in Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre Marietta Patricia Leis, distinguished American artist, participant of the Venice Biennale, author of many solo exhibitions and participant of numerous international residencies, will give a public lecture “My Life in Art”. At noon sharp, the artist will follow it up with a master class “Armature of Abstract Art”.
From June 28, 2019 to June 30, 2019 the 2nd International Doll Festival will be held in Daugavpils
For the second time Daugavpils Regional and Art Museum will receive in its premises artists, masters and fans of author dolls from all over the world. The moto of the festival of 2019 is “Dolls and Paper”. Two exhibitions will be open during the festival.
The fourth meeting “Best Practices for the Depopulation Control Action Plan” within the project “Challenges of Regional Centres: Depopulation Control, Development –best practices” (DeCoDe) took place in Łódź, Poland at the end of May. Lodzkie Region, a Partner of DeCoDe project hosted the meeting for partners and local representatives of academia, administration and non-governmental sector from eight countries: Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Romania, Italy, Denmark and Spain.

The project is co-financed by the Europe for Citizens programme, and it aims to empower actors to get socially engaged for the sake of European solidarity and cooperation. The SOLID Network consists of 13 towns, regions and civil society organizations from all over the EU, FYROM and Serbia. The aim of the project is to implement new political tools that enable local communities to have an impact on the global and European solidarity in time of institutional and humanitarian crisis that different EU countries are currently facing.
