Priority

Priority 3.  Fair and inclusive society

Specific objective:

Promoting the socioeconomic inclusion of marginalized communities, low income households and disadvantaged groups, including people with special needs, through integrated actions, including housing and social services

Common territorial challenge(s) that project tackles

In all the partner cities of the project, there are no special water sports classes for children with mental disabilities that could be attended in a group. Even on a daily basis, it is difficult for children with mental disorders to find sports classes in which they can fully participate together with other children. Most sports coaches are not qualified enough to work with these children, and the sports facilities are not suitable for this either. Significant problems are insufficient equipment (kayaks, canoes, oars, rescue equipment for safety on water, ergometers for rowing technique training on land).

Such isolated actions exacerbate social exclusion and fail to ensure equal access to diverse education. In order to ensure an inclusive society, sport must be made accessible to children with mental health problems. The lack of specialists is one of the main reasons why children with special needs cannot be fully included.

Project objective

Cross-border promoting the social inclusion of marginalised children from community-based foster homes and excluded children with special needs due to mental disabilities through integrated actions on reducing institutional fears and sport institutions capacity building  for provision of rowing activities in Panevėžys, Liepaja and Daugavpils.

Planned activities

3 international trainings for rowing coaches to work with children with special needs;

 3 international camps - rowing competitions for children with special needs;

Swimming and rowing lessons for children with special needs;

Purchase of boats and oars, life jackets, ergometer.
