88 % of residents of Daugavpils support the city's candidacy for the title of the European Capital of Culture

The absolute majority or 88 % of respondents support Daugavpils' candidacy for the title “European Capital of Culture 2027”, and almost half of the population is ready to actively participate – as volunteers in the events, implement their ideas and participate in the organization of events. This is evidenced by the survey of culture consumption in Daugavpils conducted in February 2021 by the Latvian Academy of Culture and think tank “Culturelab”.

Assessing the potential benefits of the European Capital of Culture status, the majority of the population is convinced that it will promote the development of tourism (74 %), improve the image of Daugavpils among the citizens of Latvia (64 %), promote the city's international recognition (59 %), and cultural development (54 %). Representatives of the cultural sector mention the creation of new cultural infrastructure objects as additional benefits.

Daugavpils with its rich cultural and historical heritage, dynamic development and active communities in close cooperation with Rēzekne and Latgale region is determined to hold the title of European Capital of Culture 2027.

The population survey was conducted in February 2021 by the Latvian Academy of Culture and the think tank “Culturelab”, commissioned by Daugavpils City Council. More than 1,000 respondents took part in the electronic survey. The findings of the research will be used in preparing the Daugavpils Culture Development Program for 2021-2027 and the application for the European Capital of Culture 2027 competition.

The concept of the Daugavpils` application for the European Capital of Culture 2027 is “LINGUA FRANCA: search, create, speak”. The guiding principle of the started work is the search for a common language. At cultural, artistic and interdisciplinary events, we will search for, create and speak a language of common values that will give every resident of Daugavpils, Latgale and Latvia the opportunity to realize the power of their belonging to Europe. In turn, the unique cultural story of life on the border between East and West, characteristic of Latgale, will be revealed to Europe. More information daugavpils2027.eu.
