International Ceramics Symposium Bows Out with an Exhibition at the Rothko Museum

The 13th International CERAMIC LABORATORY Symposium bows out with a new exhibition at the Rothko Museum, set to open at 4.00 p.m. on Friday, 16 May.

Established over a decade ago, CERAMIC LABORATORY has redefined the traditional ceramics symposium format. From its very first edition, which transformed Daugavpils Fortress into a vibrant experimental space, the symposium has defied convention, blending historic architecture and local material traditions to spark bold new approaches. For international artists, it has become a place of creative discovery; for local practitioners, a springboard to broader horizons.

Since its inception in 2013 by the Rothko Museum and the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Ceramics, CERAMIC LABORATORY has grown into a globally recognised platform. It continues to bring together artists from around the world to push the limits of ceramic art, exploring clay as a medium for deeply personal expression, shared cultural narratives and timeless artistic themes. The Latvian Centre for Contemporary Ceramics provides an exceptional working environment, embracing both traditional wood firing and cutting-edge experimental techniques, and consistently attracts top-tier ceramic artists. The programme features artist presentations, an opening exhibition at 4METRI gallery, and a final showcase at the Rothko Museum.

Following three action-packed weeks of dynamic creative exchange during its 13th edition, CERAMIC LABORATORY now concludes with a group exhibition in the Rothko Museum’s gallery space. Curated by Aivars Baranovskis and Valentīns Petjko, it features fifteen artists from seven countries: Viktória Maróti (Hungary), Brit Dyrnes and Eyvind Solli (Norway), Theodora Tsirakoglou (Greece), Narankhuu Sukhburen (Mongolia), Giedra Petkevičiūtė (Lithuania), Leena Kuutma (Estonia), as well as Ojūna Batbajara, Dainis Lesiņš, Inese Margēviča, Lilija Zeiļa, Una Gura, Ilona Abdulajeva, Nellija Dzalba and Kristīne Nicmane (Latvia).

The exhibition will be on view at the Rothko Museum from 16 May to 16 September 2025.

The opening ceremony is free and open to the public.

The symposium is supported by the Daugavpils City Council, Keramserviss, and the State Culture Capital Foundation’s target programme towards historical Latvian lands.
