The Rothko Centre will close the Silva Linarte 2022 Symposium with an exhibition opening and the launch of R Space

At 4 p.m. on Friday 6 May, the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre will close the Silva Linarte International Painting Symposium with an exhibition opening and the launch of R Space – a new point of attraction on its premises.

For the fourth time running, the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre hosted the Silva Linarte International Painting Symposium to honour the distinguished native of Latgale – artist and art educator Silva Veronika Linarte (1939–2018), celebrate her creative legacy and remember an entire generation of artists who shaped and transformed Latvian abstract painting.

The 4th Silva Linarte Painting Symposium brought together Paola Baertl (Peru), Nika Grzymska (Poland), Michalis Karaiskos (Greece), Ingūna Levša (Latvia), Anita Meldere (Latvia) and Irīna Špakova (Latvia).

The body of work created at the symposium can be seen as a roadmap for abstract painting – the choice of colour, brushstroke and texture, each painter’s physical manipulation of the canvas and the specificity of their abstract imagery will vary from artist to artist, but, taken together, they paint a complete picture of the unique creative time-space experienced in the symposium fortnight.

Meanwhile, R SPACE will boost the indoor public area of the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre with a new semi-open site for creative action and reflection made in dialogue with Mark Rothko’s legacy and expanding visitor experience beyond the classical exhibition viewing format.

The new space is part of the “Poetic Robotism” project series by visual artists Laura Prikule and Eva Vēvere. Ongoing for more than a decade across different contemporary art platforms, it offers visitors immersive creative experiences, including the chance to map the route for artwork development. The two artists do projects that explore the poetic and robotic aspects of life here and now, going deep into automated processes and the subjective reactions they trigger. Their exhibitions, performances and procedural events have been hosted by the KIM? Contemporary Art Centre, the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art and other cultural venues in the Baltics and Scandinavia.

Both events are open to the public free of charge.
