10th Latgale Graphic Art Symposium to close with a new exhibition

At 4 p.m. on Friday 27 May, the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre will close the International Latgale Graphic Art Symposium with a new exhibition displaying the tangible results of this two-week long creative forum.

The 10th-anniversary edition of the International Latgale Graphic Art Symposium reaffirmed that this creative forum remains the most significant international event in the graphic medium held in the Latgale Region. The symposium was produced by the SIVIA association, and this was its eighth iteration in the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre symposium framework. Over the years, this creative forum has brought together more than a hundred graphic artists from thirty-five countries. Today, it continues to revitalise the graphic medium in Daugavpils and raise the international visibility of Latgale through various printmaking activities, drawing new visiting artists to the region and maintaining other kinds of targeted efforts that keep shaping Latgale into an excellent space for creative work with an attractive international profile.

This year, the symposium ran in Daugavpils from 13 to 27 May 2022. The list of participants included ten artists from seven countries: Tommy Schneider (Austria), Michael Schitnig (Austria), Inga Heamägi (Estonia), Lembe Ruben (Estonia), Vaidotas Janulis (Lithuania), Vaiva Kovietaite-Trumpe (Lithuania), Elisabet Alsos Strand (Norway), Hongge (Mary) Zhang (China), Charlotte Dorn (Germany) and Dana Vasiļjeva (Latvia).

The symposium fortnight was packed with artist presentations, countless informal discussions and intense creative work in various graphic techniques – from monotype to silkscreen.

The nature of Daugavpils, its people and the special geographical location never fail to impress – the city seems to have a special charm that wins over residents and visitors alike, and the symposium participants were no exception. So when they come home, hearts brimming with memories of their Daugavpils experience, their artist portfolios will keep telling the story of this city on Europe’s border – not an out-of-the-way backwater on the margin, but a lively cultural centre with a broad international appeal and a strong creative vibe.

The opening event is available free of charge.
