Daugavpils is a city with old traditions in sport. The development of Daugavpils sports sector is implemented by the Daugavpils City Municipality Institution "Sports Department", which plans, implements and organizes sports events and promotes healthy lifestyle of the population.

The city has a wide sports infrastructure: Daugavpils Ice Hall, speedway stadium "Lokomotīve", sport complex "Celtnieks", Daugavpils Olympic Centre, sport base “Dzintariņš”, active rest and sports track in Stropi, Esplanāde Velopark, etc.

There are 4 sports schools in Daugavpils: Daugavpils Ice School, Daugavpils School of Individual Sports, Daugavpils Football School and Daugavpils Children and Youth Sports School.
